Home Energy Challenge

Congratulations to the 2010-2011 winners of the Home Energy Challenge!  Pearl Ridge Elementary won First Place, received $10,000 and enjoyed a special show at their school by Ohia Productions!  Click here to read more about everyone’s efforts last year.

Welcome to the 5th year of the
Hawaiian Electric Home Energy Challenge
with $23,000 in cash prizes!

The Hawaiian Electric Home Energy Challenge is designed to teach students and their families on Oahu how to lower their home electricity use and create positive energy-conserving behavior.  Hawaiian Electric Company will provide specific energy-saving tips and offer schools diverse materials and tools focusing on the importance of energy conservation and the environment.

Families will compare their 6-month energy use from October 2010 – March 2011 to the same 6-month period of the next year, October 2011 – March 2012.  The goal is to reduce home electrical use during the second 6-month period as a result of learning about energy conservation.  Schools of all sizes can compete levelly because the winner is determined by the school whose students’ home energy use decreased by the largest percentage.

The school teams with the largest percentage energy decrease will win:

$10,000 First Place
$6,000 Second Place
$3,000 Third Place

Added ways to win and learn! Schools enrolled in the Home Energy Challenge will have to option to create an Energy Conservation Project!  Four schools will win $1,000 each!

No matter which schools win the prizes, all families and schools win by reducing their home electricity use and developing energy-conserving lifestyles.

The minimum participation is 20% of the school’s student population or 50 students (which ever is more) with residential Hawaiian Electric accounts.  We will monitor the electrical use in those students’ homes, but all students in the school can participate in the educational activities and material.

Timing is very important as this program takes place near the beginning of the fall semester.  Elementary school principals need to turn in the Letter of Intent to Hawaiian Electric by August 12, 2011.   Schools will need to rally the parents and submit their Participation Entry Roster to Hawaiian Electric by September 19, 2011.
